Food and Farming Questions for Candidates: Your Election Year Resource

As elections approach, you have a powerful opportunity to advance the food and agriculture issues you care about. OEFFA has developed a Food and Farming Questions for Candidates Guide, which identifies key policy issues, and provides important background information and sample questions that you can use as you attend state or federal candidate debates, forums, and town hall meetings; meet with legislators, or call candidate offices.

The sooner candidates learn about organic agriculture and local and regional food systems and that their constituents care about these issues, the more likely they will be to support sustainable agriculture policies after they are elected. Finding out where candidates stand on farm issues that matter to you can also help you make educated decisions about which candidates to support. Further, public discourse about these issues can increase awareness and help to hold elected officials accountable to their campaign pledges.

The guide covers local food systems, genetic engineering, fracking, injection wells, climate change, the Farm Bill, crop insurance, and water quality issues, and will help you put food and agriculture issues on the political agenda and identify candidates’ positions.

This election cycle is an important one. Not only will we will elect a new president, but Ohio voters will choose representatives for 16 U.S. House seats, one U.S. Senate seat, 99 Ohio House seats, and 16 Ohio Senate seats.
