Tell Lawmakers: If GE food is safe for the table, put it on the label!

People across Ohio and the country are increasingly concerned about eating genetically engineered (GE) foods. The large corporations responsible for GE technology tell us and our lawmakers to trust their science.The truth is,there is very little independent research on the health implications of GE foods. But here is what we do know:

  • The use of herbicides has increased since GE crops, such as Roundup ready corn and soybeans, have been introduced. The increased use of the herbicide glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is a real health and environmental concern.
  • GE technology is not "feeding the world." Studies have shown that GE crop yields are not increasing to the point where we are decreasing world hunger.
  • When it comes to our health and the health of our families, most people prefer to use caution as opposed to being test subjects for big chemical companies.

Did you know?

Right now GE foods can be labeled as "natural." Inserting a foreign gene (from another plant or animal) into the genetic code of an existing plant does not resemble a natural process. While we trust farmers who have worked with cross-breeding and hybridization over thousands of years, that same trust does not extend to multi-national chemical companies engineering food that facilitates the increased use of chemical herbicides.

If you want to know which foods contain GE ingredients, sign the petition to the Ohio Legislature today. This petition will show lawmakers that you care about GE food labeling and encourage them to pass state labeling legislation.
