What Will We Stand For?
Senators are hard at work on a budget bill to keep the government from shutting down on December 11.
But, there is something else they are working on too… A measure that would stop states and the federal government from requiring labels on genetically engineered (GE) food. The legislation, known as the Deny Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act, would also allow meat and animal products raised on GE feed to labeled as non-GMO.
Including the DARK Act as a “rider” in the budget bill means that Congress would have to choose between passing this law, or a government shutdown—something few legislators want to do. Moreover, a budget rider means no public hearings, no public testimony, and no way of knowing if your Senator was for or against your right to know.
Unless you contact your Senators today,
the food industry may keep you in the dark
about the food you eat and feed your family.
If you’re in Ohio, call Senator Brown (888-896-6446) and Senator Portman (800-205-6466) (if you live outside of Ohio, click here to find your Senators), and share this message with a member of their staff:
Please make sure that the Senate GMO labeling bill includes strong, mandatory, and easy-to-understand labels on GE food. I am one of the 87% of Ohio registered voters who want to know what they eat and feed their families. There are more than 60 countries that require GMO labeling so this is not onerous for food manufacturers.
GMO labels should be clear and straightforward—not a scannable code that requires the use of a mobile device—so all consumers have the right to make their own choice. The last thing this bill should do is to allow meat and dairy products from livestock raised on GMO feed to be labeled as non-GMO. That would clearly be false and misleading labeling.
Thank you for standing up for your constituents by supporting a Senate bill that requires strong, easy-to-understand, mandatory GMO labeling.
Do it today! We only have until December 11, when the budget bill must be passed. Stand up for clear and transparent labels and ask our Senators to stand up for us!
Once you’ve made the call, click here to send us an e-mail tell us that you stood up for our right to know!
