Congress will be leaving Washington at the end of this week for their summer break but before they leave it is important that they hear from you.
A few giant companies that control the majority of the poultry, beef, and pork processing in the U.S. are working to suppress free speech and the ability of farmers to organize through a dangerous rider that has been added to the House funding proposal for the 2014 Farm Bill.
This Grain Inspection, Packers, and Stockyards Act (GIPSA) rider would:
- Eliminate free speech protection for farmers that speak out agains corporate abuse
Stop the law's ability to ensure fair and transparent contracts for farmers and ranchers
Block a regulation that requires poultry companies to give 90 day notice before cutting off chick deliveries to growers
This rider is opposed by 168 farmer, rancher, consumer, labor, farmworker, and faith organizations. Please join them now in speaking out.
Here is what you can do:
Call your member of congress and tell them to sign on to the GIPSA Fair Competition Dear Colleague letter, spearheaded by Sentors Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Jay Rockefeller of West Virgina.
Click here for more information about GIPSA as well as talking points that you can use.
This is your opportunity to fight back against these powerful special interests and help protect independent growers from meatpacking company abuses.
Once you've made your calls, please email us at email@example.com and share your experience.
